On a Firepower Roll of 1+, if you roll a 1 is it a fail or a pass?

It's a pass. No roll required.

Shocked wow... So on a bomb attack from a plane, if you hit, your opponent checks against his top armor (likely a 4+) and if he fails he is dead... That could be very nasty! Why don't more people take planes?

Basically due to the sporadic nature of having to roll for support. Its also points that aren't in a platoon on the table.

So actually getting a bomb off doesn't happen often enough?

Planes are unreliable, hence not popular in tournaments. They are more useful if bought cheaply, as a low-risk high-reward purchase. AA can neutralise air, and proper spacing of units can really reduce its effectiveness. Keeping a unit near a woods or building can force a range-in roll as well, further limiting its impact. I've never had much luck with air, and I would much rather have the points on the table. However I will admit that in some lists it's a natural fit. If your opponent is fielding a King Tiger air is great. If he's not then air is average to poor.

Yes it's really the luck of the dice with air support. I've had games where air support Tripled its points in kills and others where it didn't kill anything. There are some lists that better your chances with it with special rules ect
