Soviet Strelkovy Batalon (Late)

Battalion HQ
Battalion HQ (30) w. Sapper Platoon (85) w. Pioneer Supply Wagon (20)
w. Anti-tank Rifle Platoon (40) 175 (the wagon is a must for digging in rerolls)

Combat Companies
Strelkovy Company w. 3 Rifle Platoons (350) w. 1 Platoon SMG (0) 350 (one big blob for assaults)
Strelkovy Company w. 1 Rifle Platoon (130) 130 (one small to save on points)

Weapons Companies
Strelkovy Scout Platoon w. 1 Scout Squad (100) 100 (recce is a must and gives option to infiltrate)
Strelkovy Anti-Tank Company w. 6 45mm obr 1942 (125) 125 (vulnerable, but lots of firepower for the cost)
Heavy Mortar Company w. 6 120-PM-38 (130) 130 (good, cheap template weapon)

Corps Support Companies
Assault Gun Company w. 4 SU-122 (170) 170 (one of the best values in FoW: breakthrough gun with RoF2 and volley fire)
Independant Shtraf Company w. 1 Shtraf Platoon (125) 125 (gives the list auto-attack)
Flame Tank Company w. 10 OT-34/85 (410) w. Cupolas (10) 420 (flame tanks are a good value for the points - absolutely wreck infantry and can mess up medium tanks also)
Anti-aircraft Machine-gun Platoon w. 3 DShK AA trucks (55) 55 (cheap platoon to get the count to 9)
Total: 1780
Source: Red Bear book p. 24

This list is the best Soviet one I can field:

Soviet Rota Razvedki (Late)

HQ
Rota Razvedki HQ (35) w. Komissar (15) w. Universal Carriers (0) 50

Combat Companies
Razvedki Platoon w. 4 Rifle/MG Squads (205) w. Universal Carriers (20)
w. Flamethrower Team (0) 225 (M3s and Universal Carriers are the best transports here)
Razvedki Platoon w. 4 SMG Squads (205) w. Universal Carriers (20)
w. Flamethrower Team (0) 225

Weapons Companies
Light Armoured Car Platoon w. 7 BA-64 (175) 175 (super-fast recce - great unit)
Light Tankovy Company w. 10 MarkIII (Valentine VIII) (265) 265 (these are a great value: AT10, protected ammo and decent armour for dirt cheap)
Anti-Aircraft Platoon w. 3 DShK AA trucks (55) 55 (again, a cheap platoon to get the count to 9)
Razvedki Anti-Tank Company w. 4 76mm ZIS-3 anti-tank guns (105)
w. trucks (5) w. replace trucks with M2 halftracks (10) w.
4 .50 cal AA MG (20) 140 (this platoon is cool because it's fast and opponents will usually ignore it because there are worse threats out there)

Corps Support Companies
Decoy Tank Company w. 3 Captured Panzer IV H (165) w. Upgrade
to 3 Panther A Tanks (150) 315 (Soviet Panthers - oh yeah!)
Assault Gun Company w. 4 SU-122 (170) 170 (best value in FoW)
Heavy Mortar Company w. 6 120-PM-38 (130) w. trucks (5) w.
Observer Rifle Team (15) 150 (heavy mortars are great - they kill a tank for me almost every game)

Total: 1770
Source: p. 78 Red Bear book

Oh thanks so much for posting this. Something to do research on! I read a bit of the book last night, as well as some of the Red Bear. I think Soviets will be a lot of fun!

Okay. I've done a lot of reading over the last couple of days.

There are two Batalons that to me look like it has a good variation/selection of troops. The Strelkovy (list you posted above), and the Motostrelkovy Batalon. Both look very interesting.

So just so I knew what the price range was for picking up a force, I attempted to price out the list you posted above.

Battalion HQ
(SU700 - $12.50/ea) Battalion HQ (30) w. (SU706 - $12.50/ea) Sapper Platoon (85) w. (XX652 - $12.50/ea) Pioneer Supply Wagon (20)
w. (SU738 - $12.50/ea) Anti-tank Rifle Platoon (40) 175 (the wagon is a must for digging in rerolls)

Combat Companies
(3x SU703 - $23.00/ea) Strelkovy Company w. 3 Rifle Platoons (21) (350) w. 1 Platoon SMG (0) 350 (one big blob for assaults)
(SU733 - $23.00/ea) Strelkovy Company w. 1 Rifle Platoon(7) (130) 130 (one small to save on points)

Weapons Companies
(SU707 - $12.50/ea) Strelkovy Scout Platoon w. 1 Scout Squad (100) 100 (recce is a must and gives option to infiltrate)
(3x SU501 - $21.00/ea) Strelkovy Anti-Tank Company w. 6 45mm obr 1942 (125) 125 (vulnerable, but lots of firepower for the cost)
(2x SU751 - $23.00/ea) Heavy Mortar Company w. 6 120-PM-38 (130) 130 (good, cheap template weapon)

Corps Support Companies
(4x SU122 - $12.50/ea) Assault Gun Company w. 4 SU-122 (170) 170 (one of the best values in FoW: breakthrough gun with RoF2 and volley fire)
(SU732 - $23.00/ea) Independant Shtraf Company w. 1 Shtraf Platoon (125) 125 (gives the list auto-attack)
(2x SBX06 - $58.00/ea) Flame Tank Company w. 10 OT-34/85 (410) w. Cupolas (10) 420 (flame tanks are a good value for the points - absolutely wreck infantry and can mess up medium tanks also)
(3x SU162 - $12.50/ea) Anti-aircraft Machine-gun Platoon w. 3 DShK AA trucks (55) 55 (cheap platoon to get the count to 9)
Total: 1780

Total cost: $490 USD

It is under $500. I am not sure about the Flame Tanks. Is there an attachment I need to buy for the T34/85 for the flamers?

(SU707 - $12.50/ea) Strelkovy Scout Platoon w. 1 Scout Squad (100) 100 (recce is a must and gives option to infiltrate)

Can you get BA-64 instead in that list?
7 ba-64 are the best scout platoon in the game

(2x SBX06 - $58.00/ea) Flame Tank Company w. 10 OT-34/85 (410) w. Cupolas (10) 420 (flame tanks are a good value for the points - absolutely wreck infantry and can mess up medium tanks also)
The biggest down side to flame tanks, is if they get hit and fail their armour save, they are die since you firepower are rerolled againt flame tanks.

I think rota is one of the strongest list russian can use. I cant build you one, but more experience they are a hard force to go against.

Also, aare you coming out this saturday?

I can lend you american german stuff or you can play on my team or someone elses team

What is happening on Saturday? I am free on Saturday morning and afternoon.

I obviously haven't played a game yet, but I have been watching the Boot Camp videos and have read quite a bit of the book. That being said, I would be really weak on tactics and the rules, considering... At worst, it would be great to watch a game being played, and see the tactics being used.

What is the strength of the Rota Razvedki? The speed of the infantry being in armored transports? Tank Killers? Mortars? I've actually read this online, but did not see details as to why.

First off, i am really burnt from submitting marks. So i hope i make sense.

On saturday's we usually get together to play. there is usually 4-8 of us playing depending on the weekend. we play on wednesday, thurday but you have to set it up beforehand. where as on saturdays you can usually come down and find someone to play with out setting it up beforehand.

With the rota, you have one inf stand per transport that can have a 50 cal attached to it. this provids a lot of firepower and mobility to the base combat platoons. also, the 7 ba-64 with this company is the best recon option as i mention beforehand. now your supports can range from heavy tank support, or arty and antitank guns. for more detail outside of the base combat platoons brian or tim will know a lot more than me.
Although rota look small, they are all in transports and so you have 9 transports with 50 call running around the board and can dismounted at the objective when you need them.

I think before you start ordering you should have a look to see how everything operates as you can see what you think you would enjoy to play.

I've been doing a lot of surfing today, and reading. I am really liking the Legkiy Samokhodno-Artillyeriyskiy Polk (Light Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment) options. Has anyone tried one of these lists, and do you think it would offer a good balance, or a competitive list?

Possible List. Does it look weak?

Legkiy Samokhodno-Artillyeriyskiy Polk
HQ SU-76 (35)
4 x SU-122 (170)
4 x SU-122 (170)
4 x SU-76 (150)
4 x SU-76 (150)
Recon platoon, 1 squad + BA-64 (125)
4 x IS-2 with .50cal AAMG (560)
Artillery. 4 x 122mm obr 1938 + obbo (155)
Reserve Artillery. 4 x A19 122mm + obbo (260)
1775 Points

Hey Trevor. We usually start at 11:00 or a little before. That Strelk list you posted looks very strange. I haven't played a lot of lists with fortifications, that's more Lorne's area of expertise. It looks like a list designed to beat a list with lots of medium-heavy armour. I'm not sure how well it would play around here. Like I said earlier, Strelk is usually a strong meta choice for tournaments. I don't think it would be much fun for regular play. I say that because the list basically ignores two of the three phases in the game. It will not move, and it will not assault. It will however, shoot.

As for the light self-propelled list it is pretty solid. Brian fields it from time to time. The main problem is anti-tank, because there is no tank killer company as a support option. I think Brian runs IS-2s and/or heavy artillery to deal with big cats. It's definitely a playable force, although not considered really strong on the tournament scene.

Just saw the list you posted. Unfortunately the Katys are really weak. Most people consider them unplayable. Gun teams can benefit from the protection of gunshields and can dig themselves in, trucks don't get either of these benefits. Even if they do get to shoot, they are just not that destructive. Best to wait for a rules revamp on the Russian rockets. As for the SU-122s: You actually can have too much of a good thing in FoW. They are great and all, but 16 is too many. There is a definite rock-paper-scissors element to FoW and you will need stuff to deal with a variety of threats. Your SU-122s will get slaughtered by enemy medium tanks. Dropping down to 8 will free up some points for support. The Strelk company is also pretty weak. It is too small to be much use as anything but a speedbump. You will lose Quality of Quantity in a single turn. In a Strelk battalion you can mix sappers into your infantry to make them threatening to heavy armour, but strelk purchased as support don't have this option.

You're going to need some stuff in your list to kill tanks. Lots of tanks.

Had some help on the BF Forums.

Updated the list above, does it look better? Four IS-2 are supposed to be pretty strong tanks.

P.S. I will swing by the Den at 11:00am to say hi, and check out some games!
