Trevor Y Army Painting Diary

Post  Trevor Y. on Mon May 13, 2013 4:05 pm

I thought I would post here how my painting is doing so far with my Germans, and send updates and link pics as I progress.

Today I tested out my airbrush, and it worked well. I put the basecoat on ALL of my vehicles, and turrets. It only took me about 4 hours. It was around 50 vehicles (10 Stugs, 10 Panzer IV, 5 Panther, 1 King Tiger, 3 Puma, 13 Half Tacks, etc...). I used Vallejo Model Color Middlestone. Just used distilled water for thinning the paint, and only had to clear out the airbrush 2x during that whole session, by shooting through some window cleaner, and then water. Worked really well.

Next steps:
1) Finish camouflage on all vehicles (done)
2) Paint tracks and tires (done)
3) Highlight vehicles (done)
4) Take a break and Play World of Tanks or Marvel Heroes beta this evening (done)
5) Paint details (done)
6) Paint Commanders (done)
7) Use focused washes to add shadow (done)
8) Apply Decals (not done)
9) Varnish (done)
10) Start painting Nebs, and determine whether I want to start painting my Panzergrenadiers before the weekend.

My goal was to finish all my vehicles during my week off, but it looks like I will be able to do much more than that. Airbrushing is super fast. My Nebs will be my next priority to paint, so I will have a 100 % fully painted Tank Company as soon as possible to play with.

Armored vehicles done.

Still do do:
1) Paint Jeeps, trucks
2) Paint 2 platoons of Panzergrenadiers + Command
3) Paint Nebs
4) Assemble and paint additional infantry and support purchased recently

Switching gears. My Russian army is fully painted. It requires a few different units to help make it competitive. Going to blast these out and paint them before going back to my Germans.

Got five SU-100 with 85-M swappable guns.  Assembled and primed.  Smile

Waiting for my Plastic Soldier Company Heavy Mortars to finish off my Mortar Company, and ZIS-3 guns to come in so I can assemble and paint my God of War Artillery.  Will be taking vacation when they come in and will assemble and paint them.
Smile

Been on an assembling frenzy with my Soviets over the last 24 hours.

I thought I would diarize this to keep track of progress. Smile

Assembling and priming God of War Artillery including Komissar, Staff Team, Command Team, 4 Stalinets Tractors, 8 ZIS-3 stands (PSC), and 4 Howitzer stands (BFM). Assembled 2 Heavy Mortars stands (PSC), based and primed. Assembling 8 BA-64.

Painting these first before I tackle more. I have more Maxim HMG, PTRD, light mortars, and more infantry stands I can assemble and paint, if I feel the need.

Will be doing a little more assembly and then bunch of priming today. Will start the epic painting tomorrow starting with base coat airbrushing the vehicles (5 SU-100, 8 BA-64, 4 Stalinets Tractors), and base coating the infantry stands.

Did you pick a camo scheme or just green for your russians?

Just green.  Following what the other painter did for consistency. I've never done decals before, so I am nervous about that.

Plan:

Tomorrow will be finishing up 4 Howitzers and 8 ZIS-3, with four crew on each stand, 4 Stalinetz Tractors, finish painting 5 SU-100. Just finished painting all the crew for the God of War (50ish men - took all day). Now just have to do the bases and install the guns and men on them.

Friday will finish painting the two Heavy Mortars (already assembled, primed, and based), and may look at adding decals onto the tanks.

FYI if you use magnets to swap guns you can use the howitzers(122 mm) or Zis-3 as germans in some lists. The zis isn't used often though. You could use the Russian based ones also if you wanted.

Underestimated the amount of work, so I am a little behind.

As of right now:
8 ZIS-3 Stands totally complete.
4 Stalinetz Tractors totally complete with weathering effects.
4 Howitzer stands totally complete.
5 SU-100 Tanks complete with weathering effects and ready for decals

To do tomorrow:
Staff Team
Komissar
Command Team
2 Heavy Mortar stands
maybe decals on tanks if have time?

All are assembled so technically I could play with them unpainted.

To do next week:
8 BA-64
2 MG Nests

Not likely to get decals done tomorrow. Will have to be Saturday or Sunday. Sad

DONE!

All I have left is my eight BA-64s and 2 MG nests. I will pick away at these in a few days hopefully, and finish up my tank decals on the SU-100's. The marathon is over! Time to rest and play a few games with them!
