napoleonic miniatures

Post  Shaun on Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:31 pm

This is way off topic of flames of war but i was wondering if anyone has play napoleonic or know much about it.

Is it a playable time period with mini's like fow or is an all day fest to do one battle?
to me it seems non of napoleonic miniatures games are really not that good.
Does anyone play it here? I really doubt that.

Any thoughts would be good Smile

I remember hearing Carson (former FoW and current WH player) had been looking into getting into that time period. I'm not sure whether he ended up getting anything or playing any.

I think it's a bit bigger in Regina than here. You risk getting into grognard territory with Napoleonics, which can be a bit intimidating. "That battalion of hussars is wearing the wrong cap badge!" It's never a period that has really appealed to me. Dystopian Wars gives me my steam fix, with added punk.

Yeah Carson and a dude named Bob Gonda were going to get into it. 15mm scale mini's I believe.

I've played some nap's way back when and I hate the period. Grand strategy games are fine for that period. I hate the tactical representations though. I can't get past the fact that humanity started using guns and then waited a hundred years before someone decided maybe ducking and not getting shot wasn't a bad idear.

yea, i didnt think there was a crowd that really played it.

I love the time period scott and the tactics they used. It used to make no sense to me but after getting into the tactics I started to really like how they fought. I really like the guards in there 3 line formation , with the first row kneeling and reloading and the second shooting Smile most likely i make a diorama of it in the summer when i got some time for that.

After reading about Napoleonic tactics I really, really hated the period even more. To each their own.

Every army marches to war ready to fight the previous one. With few exceptions, this is the history of warfare. Technology outstrips tactics and then we see debacles. I find all periods of history's warfare interesting, but Napoleonics has never appealed to me from a gaming perspective. I'd rather play ancients.

So very true!

Yea, i can see that.

I think i am going to do a diorama of waterloo with the french old guards matching into the british line infantry . This should take the bug away Smile
